Below are instructions to help Iridium Certus (Thales VesseLINK 200 and 700) users get fully setup and working with the Redbox and Teleport-it email compression.
Disable WiFi on the Thales Certus - DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!
By default the Thales Certus creates a completely unsecured WiFi network that gives anyone who joins it full access to your Iridium Certus satellite connection... This means no password or any restriction to the kids on the neighbouring boat who just want a free WiFi connection to watch Youube...
We would recommend that you disable this immediately and use MailASail's Redbox router to protect the connection to the Certus.
To disable the WiFi, access to the Certus admin portal (usually 192.168.55.1) via the Red Box in firewall mode 3 or 4, then login as the admin user. Use the relevant option on the left hand navigation menu to configure the WiFi connection.
Without needing your Satellite system and Redbox
- Signup for a teleport-it (@mailasail email) account - http://admin.mailasail.com/signup
- Subscribe for a period of time (12 or 24 months) - http://www.mailasail.com/Subscribe/Home
- Follow our step-by-step instructions of how to link your new teleport-it email with an email program - http://www.mailasail.com/Support/Teleport-Mail-Setup-Guide
- Test by sending some emails back and forth. Then try out the weather responder - http://weather.mailasail.com/Teleport-Weather/Teleport-weather-Usage
Needing your Satellite system (Iridium Certus)
Pre Requisites:
- Activated airtime and Sim card placed in below deck unit of satellite terminal.
- Turn on Iridium Certus and Redbox and plug Ethernet cable from Black terminal (LAN port) into Red Box via Wired1 or Wired2.
- Via Wifi, connect your chosen device with Redbox. If via WiFi, will need to put in your Redbox Password to connect. (Can be done via LAN cable if you prefer if your MAC or PC has LAN port).
- RedBox portal page - Type the following into the address bar of a web browser (Do not type .com, do type the "/") and save this as a book mark.
redbox/ - In 'Connect to Internet' choose the option you have plugged the Certus ethernet cable in and select option 2 or 3 of the firewall and confirm your choice.
- Web interface (can only be accessed from firewall setting 3) - Open a web browser and type in 192.168.55.1. Save the page as a bookmark also. This is the web interface Of the Iridium Thales Certus system. It does not incur an airtime cost to view this page, but please be 100% certain you are NOT in 'unrestricted' option of the firewall.
- Once the Certus Thales Portal page opens, click the LOGIN button at the top of the page. Enter “admin” for the Login ID and Password.
- Under the 'Dash Board' Main screen, you will now be able to activate the system. Press 'Activate' under the 'Services' tab. Then, 'Apply'.
If the Satellite Icon on the top right of the screen goes green, you are now ready to use the system and Test.
Final Test
- Test by sending/receiving an email using your already set up mailasail account. (teleport it)
- If successful, well done. You are all set up!
Ending a data session
Once you have finished receiving and sending your mail you should take steps to terminate the ability to send/receive data. You can do this by either/both;
- Going into the Redbox portal page and selecting 'Disconnect Internet' under the 'Choose a Gateway' section.
- Going into the Certus Thales Portal page and deactivating under the 'services' heading.
Either of these will ensure no more data is transmitted/received through the satellite system.
Making a phone call
- This process varies slightly depending which Iridium Certus terminal you are using. Assuming it's the Thales Certus then it contains a PBX feature for internal calling between handsets, so you need to prefix outside calls with a '9'
- Also remember on ALL satellite systems you are effectively calling from a virtual country, so you need to always dial the full international dialling code
- Peculiarly the Thales Certus does not want you to add the "00" or similar prefix that you might be used to for calling international numbers
- Imagine you wished to call mailasail's office. This number is +442070432832 (or could be written 00442070432832)
- This will be dialed as: 9442070432832
- Try calling a number local to you to test success and voice quality
